TransType 4 for Mac and Windows

TransType 4 arrived in December 2013 as a complete rewrite of our font conversion app. It added multi-color OpenType output and web font export to its core toolkit.

You can convert virtually any font format into modern OpenType PS (.otf), TrueType (.ttf), and @font-face web fonts. This includes VFB and UFO source files. The app runs on both Mac and Windows.

Here’s what it does:

  • Format conversion: Reads legacy and current font formats. Writes OpenType PS, OpenType TT, and @font-face web font packages.
  • Family naming repair: Fixes and reorganizes font family naming automatically. You can also drag and drop to make manual adjustments.
  • Multi-color OpenType: Generates color OpenType fonts from layered source fonts or BitFonter Photofont files.
  • Effects: Applies outlines, shadows, and other transformations to generate new font variants.

This release replaced TransType 3. The older version handled basic cross-platform format conversion but predated the OpenType and web font era.
