Free FontLab VI workshops at ATypI Antwerp
In September 2018, FontLab ran three free FontLab VI workshops at the ATypI Antwerp conference — two introductory sessions in the morning and an advanced one in the afternoon.
The workshops took place on Tuesday, 11 September 2018 at AP Hogeschool, Campus Spoor Noord in Antwerp, Belgium, alongside the ATypI Antwerp conference. Each session was capped at 20 participants and was free to attend. Thomas Phinney, Yuri Yarmola, and Adam Twardoch also attended the main conference.
FontLab VI for FontLab Studio 5 users¶
A morning session with Thomas Phinney and Yuri Yarmola, aimed at FontLab Studio 5 users moving to FontLab VI. It covered what was new and what had changed, and how to avoid the “who moved my cheese?” feeling. Topics included how Elements improve on Components, when to reach for the Rapid tool versus the Pen tool, metrics and kerning workflows, the new editing tools (Power Nudge, Power Guides, Smart Corners, Tunni Lines), OpenType Variations as the replacement for Multiple Master, and working with flexible Layers.
Type drawing basics with FontLab VI¶
A morning session with Adam Twardoch for people starting out in type design. Working from an existing mini-font of a few glyphs, the group extended it while exploring FontLab VI’s drawing, spacing, and kerning tools.
Advanced type design and font creation with FontLab VI¶
An afternoon session with Adam Twardoch, Yuri Yarmola, and Thomas Phinney for experienced type designers. It went into the more advanced parts of FontLab VI: drawing with guides, grids, smart nodes, and open contours; building families through layers, masters, and variation; spacing with expressions and kerning with classes; extending glyph sets with elements and anchors; and the technical end — OpenType features, hinting, exporting, and interchange with other font tools.
